About Richard McCranie
He approaches therapy as an alliance built on mutual trust and open communication about feelings, thoughts, and behaviors. He emphasizes collaborative goal-setting and the development of practical coping strategies to help clients manage stress and regain clarity when parts of life feel unmanageable. While counseling cannot promise specific outcomes, he commits his training and experience to supporting clients as they work toward their goals.
He earned bachelor’s degrees in psychology and history from The University of Georgia in 2004 and began his early career at The Marcus Institute as a primary therapist serving individuals on the autism spectrum and others with ongoing behavioral health needs. In 2007 he moved to New York City to serve as a case manager supervisor with Partnership of Innovative Comprehensive Care, Inc., supporting teams working with developmental, intellectual, and mental health disorders. Returning to South Georgia in 2011, he completed a Master of Science in Clinical/Counseling Psychology at Valdosta State University while working as a graduate teaching assistant and interning at Behavioral Health Services of South Georgia.
Following graduate school he gained experience at Crescent Pines/Anchor Hospital and The DeKalb Community Service Board as an admission and intake counselor from 2012 to 2014, then joined Ascena Health (St. Jude’s Recovery Center, Inc.) in 2014. In 2015 he transitioned into therapist roles providing one-on-one therapy and case management in residential and outpatient settings. He obtained his professional counselor license in 2018 and continued treating clients with co-occurring substance use and mental health disorders. In 2019 he took on roles including medication assisted treatment coordinator, residential manager supervisor, and contributed to an outpatient program supporting the reentry of federal offenders on probation. In 2023 he was named director of clinical services overseeing clinical and residential programs, and later that year he established a private practice to continue offering professional care for individuals with addictive, behavioral, and mental health concerns.

Approaches He Uses and What Online Care Offers
Richard draws on client-centered therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), and dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) to guide his online work. Client-centered therapy emphasizes a supportive, nonjudgmental relationship where the client’s own goals and perspectives shape the work; it helps people who need acceptance, clearer self-understanding, and collaborative problem solving. CBT focuses on identifying and changing unhelpful thinking and behavior patterns to reduce symptoms of anxiety, stress, and addictive behaviors through practical skills and structured exercises. DBT offers tools for emotional regulation, distress tolerance, and improved interpersonal effectiveness, which can be especially helpful for impulsivity, intense emotions, and relationship challenges.
Choosing the right approach is part of therapy itself. He works collaboratively with each person to assess needs, goals, and preferences, and adapts techniques from these models to create a personalized plan that fits the client’s situation.
Online sessions by video, phone, live chat, or text-based messaging make it possible to access therapy with greater flexibility and convenience. These options allow clients to fit sessions into busy schedules, maintain continuity of care during life transitions, and connect with licensed professionals from different locations while using methods that match their communication style.
